    Reflection

Stories of unexpected conversion unsettle our assumptions about who is reachable by grace. Becket Cook's journey, from a life shaped by one set of convictions to Christian faith, is not offered here as a template for anyone else's story, only as one man's account of change. Scripture is full of surprising turns: Saul, a man persecuting the church, becomes Paul, its most tireless missionary, and later writes simply, 'I am what I am by the grace of God' (1 Corinthians 15:10). That line resists triumphalism; grace, not achievement, is the explanation given. Christians listening to any conversion account do well to resist turning it into a trophy or a tidy argument, and instead to notice the patience such stories usually involve, the years, the relationships, the doubts worked through slowly rather than in a single dramatic moment. Whatever else is true, a changed life invites reflection rather than certainty about anyone else's path.

    Questions to sit with

    • What has surprised you about how faith has taken root in someone's life?
    • How do you respond when someone's journey to faith differs greatly from your own?
    • What does grace, rather than achievement, mean in your own story?
