Reflection
The phrase 'not enough faith to be an atheist' echoes a well-known argument that disbelief, too, requires assumptions taken on trust, about the origin of the universe, the reliability of reason, the source of moral obligation. It is a fair provocation rather than a knockdown proof, and it is worth taking seriously without treating it as the last word in a conversation that thoughtful people continue to have honestly. The pairing with 'Woke Jesus' suggests a further concern: that Christ's teaching can be reshaped to fit whatever cultural mood is current, flattened into either mere activism or mere therapy. The historic faith resists that flattening. Jesus asked Peter directly, 'But what about you? Who do you say I am?' (Matthew 16:15), a question that still requires a personal answer rather than a borrowed cultural one. Wrestling honestly with doubt, and refusing easy caricatures of Jesus in either direction, are both marks of a faith maturing rather than merely inherited.
Questions to sit with
- What assumptions do you bring to questions about God's existence?
- Have you ever noticed Jesus being reshaped to fit a particular agenda?
- What would it mean to answer Jesus's question 'who do you say I am' for yourself today?
