    Reflection

Journeys between faiths are rarely simple exchanges of one set of beliefs for another; they usually involve family, culture, and years of quiet questioning long before any public step is taken. A Muslim woman's account of coming to faith in Jesus deserves to be heard on those terms, as a personal history rather than a debating point against Islam as practised by others. The Gospels record Jesus meeting a Samaritan woman whose life and background made her an unlikely conversation partner, yet he spoke with her directly and without contempt, telling her, 'God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the Spirit and in truth' (John 4:24). That posture, honest engagement without scorn, is a useful measure for how such stories should be received. Whatever is said in any particular testimony, the underlying human questions, about belonging, about truth, about whether God can be known personally, are ones that cross every culture and deserve patient, respectful attention.

    Questions to sit with

    • What assumptions do you carry about people from a different faith background?
    • How does Jesus's conversation with the woman at the well model respectful honesty?
    • What would it take for you to genuinely listen to someone's story rather than debate it?
