    Reflection

To have thought God a tyrant, and then to speak of him differently, suggests a costly reappraisal of who God is. Many people's image of God is shaped less by careful theology than by particular authority figures, particular sufferings, particular fears, and unlearning a distorted picture can take as long as learning a true one. The Christian claim is striking by comparison: that God is characterised not by domination but by self-giving love, made visible in Jesus, who said, 'Whoever has seen me has seen the Father' (John 14:9). That is a high claim, and it invites scrutiny rather than mere assent. Ex-Muslim testimonies deserve to be heard with care and without triumphalism, since they describe a real personal cost, the loss of family ties and community, alongside whatever they have found. The wider question worth sitting with is simpler and harder: what picture of God have I inherited, and has it ever truly been tested against how Jesus is described in the Gospels?

    Questions to sit with

    • Where did your earliest picture of God come from?
    • Has that picture ever been challenged or revised?
    • What difference does it make to think of God as self-giving rather than domineering?
