    Reflection

The relationship between spiritual oppression and mental illness is one of the more delicate topics in Christian conversation, and it deserves careful, humble handling rather than quick conclusions in either direction. Scripture does describe genuine spiritual affliction, and it also treats physical and mental suffering with compassion, as when Jesus wept at Lazarus's tomb despite knowing the resurrection was near (John 11:35). Christians have sometimes done real harm by attributing every mental health struggle to demonic activity, neglecting the value of medical and psychological care, while others have swung too far the other way, dismissing the spiritual dimension entirely. A wiser path holds both realities without collapsing one into the other, offering prayer and pastoral care alongside proper clinical support where needed. Paul's reminder that God has not given believers 'a spirit of fear, but of power, love and self-discipline' (2 Timothy 1:7) speaks comfort into both spiritual and psychological struggle without requiring a single diagnosis for either.

    Questions to sit with

    • How can churches discuss mental health and spiritual struggle without oversimplifying either?
    • What does Jesus's grief at Lazarus's tomb suggest about how he regards human suffering?
    • Why might holding both spiritual and medical dimensions together serve people better than choosing one?
