    Reflection

Interfaith debate can easily slide into point scoring, yet at its best it offers a chance for two convictions to be examined honestly and respectfully in the open. Christians engaging with Islam do well to remember Paul's example in Athens, where he engaged thoughtfully with unfamiliar beliefs, finding points of connection before presenting the gospel plainly (Acts 17:22-31). Peter's instruction to give a reasoned answer for one's hope 'with gentleness and respect' (1 Peter 3:15-16) applies especially to conversations across religious lines, where tone can matter as much as content. Genuine differences between Christian and Islamic understandings of God, scripture and Christ are real and worth exploring carefully, but that exploration is best done without contempt for those who believe differently. Debate can clarify what each faith actually teaches, correcting caricatures on both sides, and that clarity, pursued with humility, serves truth far better than rhetorical victory ever could.

    Questions to sit with

    • What distinguishes a respectful interfaith debate from one driven mainly by point scoring?
    • How does Paul's approach in Athens model engaging with unfamiliar beliefs thoughtfully?
    • Why might gentleness matter as much as accuracy when discussing religious differences?
