    Reflection

Thirty seven years is a long time to hold a settled conviction, and it makes any reported change of heart worth taking seriously rather than dismissing as impulsive. Scripture offers its own dramatic precedent in Saul of Tarsus, who persecuted the early church with genuine zeal before an encounter that reoriented his entire life (Acts 9:1-19). Long held scepticism is rarely shallow; it is often built on real questions, disappointments or intellectual conviction, and any account of someone moving from mockery to faith deserves to be heard on those terms rather than caricatured. Jesus told his followers that 'with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible' (Matthew 19:26), a claim that such stories are meant to illustrate rather than sensationalise. What is most striking about long delayed turns towards faith is not the drama of the moment itself but the patience of a God willing to wait decades for someone to look again.

    Questions to sit with

    • What might sustain someone's scepticism about faith for decades?
    • How does the story of Saul becoming Paul help us think about sudden or dramatic change?
    • What does patience on God's part suggest about how he relates to long term doubt?
