    Reflection

Stories of addiction, imprisonment and eventual encounter with God are difficult to hear casually, since they often carry real trauma alongside real hope. Scripture never minimises the destructive power of such seasons; the prodigal son's descent is described plainly, ending with him 'longing to fill his stomach' with what pigs were eating (Luke 15:16). Yet that same parable insists that no distance is too far for a father to run towards a returning child, and that welcome, not condemnation, is God's first response (Luke 15:20). Public testimonies of dramatic turnaround can inspire, but they can also unintentionally suggest that faith requires a rock bottom moment to be genuine, which is not the biblical pattern; grace meets people at every point along the way, not only the lowest. Whatever specific details this story holds, its shape echoes something ancient and reliable: that no life, however marked by loss, is beyond the reach of restoration.

    Questions to sit with

    • Why might dramatic turnaround stories sometimes give a misleading impression of how faith usually works?
    • How does the parable of the prodigal son shape our expectations of how God receives people?
    • What might restoration look like for someone whose life has been shaped by addiction or incarceration?
