    Reflection

Why is there something rather than nothing is among the oldest questions philosophy and theology have ever posed, and it remains genuinely unresolved by science alone. Genesis opens with the simple, sweeping claim that 'in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth' (Genesis 1:1), offering not a scientific mechanism but a theological answer: existence itself is gift, not accident. Scientists who hold deep Christian conviction alongside rigorous research often describe their work as an exploration of how, set within a larger conviction about why, and that distinction matters. Faith does not require scientific inquiry to stop asking questions, nor does careful science require faith to be set aside; the two can, and often do, coexist thoughtfully in the same mind. Whatever specific arguments are made about origins, the underlying wonder that anything exists at all, rather than nothing, remains a question that points many honest thinkers back towards a Creator rather than away from one.

    Questions to sit with

    • What do you make of the difference between asking how something happens and why it exists at all?
    • How does Genesis 1:1 frame existence as gift rather than accident?
    • Can rigorous science and deep faith genuinely coexist, in your view, and why or why not?
