    Reflection

Confronting the possibility of imminent death, even hypothetically, has a way of clarifying what actually matters. Thought experiments and real accounts of near death moments often prompt people to reassess their priorities almost instantly, cutting through the distractions and postponements that fill ordinary life. Scripture repeatedly encourages this kind of perspective, urging believers to number their days, that they may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12). This is not meant to induce fear but clarity. James wrote plainly that life is like a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes (James 4:14), a sobering but ultimately freeing observation, since recognising the brevity of life can prompt a more intentional way of living now rather than indefinite postponement of what truly matters. Imagining a limited amount of time left is an uncomfortable exercise, but it can be a genuinely useful one, revealing quickly which relationships, reconciliations, and priorities have quietly been left unattended.

    Questions to sit with

    • If you genuinely had very little time left, what would you want to say or do first?
    • What have you been postponing that this kind of thought experiment brings into focus?
    • How does thinking about life's brevity change the way you want to live today?
