    Reflection

Why God permits evil to exist at all, including the ongoing activity described in Scripture as Satan's opposition, is one of the oldest and most difficult questions in theology, often called the problem of evil. There is no single answer that fully satisfies every honest question, and Christians across history have offered a range of responses centred on free will, the necessity of genuine moral choice, and the mysterious purposes of God that are not always visible from within a limited human vantage point. What Scripture does offer is not a full explanation but a promise: that evil, however real and painful, will not have the final word. The book of Revelation looks forward to a day when God will wipe every tear from people's eyes, and death, mourning, crying, and pain will be no more (Revelation 21:4). This does not remove the difficulty of the question in the present, but it does frame present suffering within a larger story that Christians believe is ultimately heading toward justice and restoration rather than endless darkness.

    Questions to sit with

    • How do you personally wrestle with the existence of evil and suffering in the world?
    • Does the promise of eventual restoration bring you comfort, or does it feel too distant to help now?
    • What answers to the problem of evil have you found most and least satisfying?
