I thought faith was for losers

There is a common assumption that faith belongs to people who could not cope with reality on their own, a kind of emotional crutch for the weak. It is worth asking where that idea comes from. Often it grows out of a culture that prizes self-sufficiency above almost everything else, where admitting need looks like defeat. Christianity actually starts from the opposite premise. It says every person, strong or struggling, needs grace, and that admitting this is not weakness but honesty. Jesus said it is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick, and he was not being unkind, he was describing the human condition (Mark 2:17). Paul went further, boasting in his weaknesses because God's power is made perfect there (2 Corinthians 12:9). Far from being for losers, faith asks for the humility that any strong person can find hardest to give.
Questions to sit with
- Where might pride be stopping you from admitting a genuine need in your own life?
- What would change if you saw weakness as an opening rather than a failure?
- Who in your life models honest faith rather than a performance of having it all together?
