Reflection
Questions about specific behaviours and habits, such as whether recreational drug use is compatible with Christian faith, come up often and deserve honest rather than dismissive engagement. Scripture does not mention cannabis directly, so any answer has to be reasoned from broader biblical principles rather than a single explicit verse. Paul's teaching about the body being a temple of the Holy Spirit, and his call to glorify God with the body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), is often cited in these discussions, alongside warnings about being mastered by anything, whether substances or other habits. Many Christians reason from principles of self-control, clarity of mind, respect for the law where relevant, and care for one's health and relationships, rather than from a specific prohibition. Different believers and traditions reach different practical conclusions, and it is worth being wary of anyone offering an overly simple answer to a genuinely complex personal question. What remains constant across Christian thought is the underlying concern: not legalistic rule-keeping for its own sake, but a desire for freedom, clarity, and wholeness in how a person lives.
Questions to sit with
- What principles do you use to think through questions that Scripture does not address directly?
- Do you notice any habits in your own life that quietly have more control over you than you would like?
- How do you balance personal freedom with concern for your long term wellbeing?
