    Reflection

Doctors and other medical professionals sometimes speak of a growing sense of wonder at the design and complexity of the human body the longer they study it, from the intricacy of cellular processes to the coordination of organ systems. This kind of testimony echoes the psalmist's declaration of being fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), a verse written long before anyone understood DNA or the nervous system in detail, yet still remarkably fitting. Wonder at creation is not proof in a scientific sense, and Christians have differing views on how science and faith relate to questions of biological complexity. But it does point to something worth taking seriously: that close, careful attention to the natural world often produces awe rather than dismissal, even among those trained to be sceptical and precise. The Bible describes creation itself as declaring the glory of God (Psalm 19:1), and it seems fitting that those who study it most closely sometimes find themselves agreeing, even unexpectedly.

    • Has learning more about how something works ever deepened your sense of wonder?
    • Where in the natural world do you feel closest to a sense of God's presence?
    • Do you tend to see science and faith as working together or in tension?
