    Freemasons and the satanic

    Reflection

Claims that Freemasonry has satanic or occult roots have circulated for a long time, and opinions on the subject vary widely, including among Christians. Some churches have historically expressed concern about Masonic ritual, symbolism and oaths as being incompatible with exclusive allegiance to Christ, while others see it as a fraternal and charitable organisation with no religious rival intent. It is a subject where strong claims are made more often than careful evidence is presented, and caution is warranted before repeating the most dramatic versions. What scripture is clear about is the seriousness of divided allegiance and secret oaths that bind a person's conscience. Jesus taught that no one can serve two masters (Matthew 6:24), and believers are called to let their yes be yes and their no be no (Matthew 5:37), avoiding oaths that obscure rather than clarify commitment. Whatever view one takes of any particular organisation, the underlying principle is worth keeping: examine anything that asks for allegiance alongside, or ahead of, allegiance to Christ.
