Reflection
Persecution has shadowed Christianity since its earliest days, from the stoning of Stephen recorded in Acts to the ongoing suffering of believers in various parts of the world today. For many Western viewers this can feel like a distant historical reality, yet it remains a present experience for millions of Christians globally who face real risk for practising their faith. Scripture does not treat persecution as an unfortunate accident but as something Jesus warned his followers to expect: "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you" (John 15:18). This is sobering rather than comforting in any easy sense, but it also reframes suffering for faith as something that has always accompanied genuine discipleship rather than undermining it. Stories of persecuted believers often carry remarkable testimonies of endurance, forgiveness and hope that can challenge more comfortable expressions of faith elsewhere. They invite reflection on what one actually believes deeply enough to hold onto under real pressure, and on solidarity with those who suffer for convictions many share more easily.
