Jesus did not come to start religion

    Reflection

The idea that Jesus did not come to start a religion is a familiar and provocative one. It draws a distinction between religion understood as rules, rituals and institutions, and relationship understood as personal trust in and knowledge of God. Many people who feel disillusioned with organised religious life find this distinction freeing. There is genuine substance behind it. The Gospels record Jesus in frequent conflict with religious leaders of his day, not because he opposed devotion to God but because he resisted empty legalism that missed the heart of the law. He summarised the entire law as loving God and loving neighbour (Matthew 22:37-39), a relational and moral centre rather than a purely ceremonial one. At the same time, historic Christianity has always involved structure, community and shared practice, since faith was never meant to be lived in isolation. The tension is not really between religion and relationship but between lifeless ritual and living faith, both of which can exist within organised church life or outside it.
