    Pray like a warrior

    Reflection

The image of praying like a warrior draws on scripture's frequent use of battle language for the life of prayer, most notably Paul's description of putting on the full armour of God to stand against spiritual opposition (Ephesians 6:10-18). This is not language about literal violence but about the seriousness and readiness with which prayer is meant to be approached, as something active and contested rather than passive and casual. Jacob's night-long wrestling with God before receiving a blessing (Genesis 32:24-29) offers another picture of this same intensity, prayer that persists rather than gives up at the first sign of silence. Warrior imagery can be misused to suggest aggression toward other people, which is not the point; the struggle described in scripture is against discouragement, doubt, distraction and spiritual apathy, fought through persistence rather than force. Learning to pray with that kind of tenacity, rather than treating prayer as a brief formality, is a discipline most believers find takes real practice.
