Reflection
Growth, whether personal, spiritual or emotional, rarely happens quickly or comfortably. It tends to involve setbacks, patience and often unwelcome circumstances that push us further than we would choose to go on our own. This is as true of spiritual maturity as it is of any other kind of development. The New Testament frequently uses agricultural imagery to describe growth in faith, comparing it to seeds, roots and seasons rather than instant transformation. Paul reminds believers that one plants, another waters, but it is God who gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6), a picture that removes pressure to force spiritual progress through sheer effort alone while still valuing consistent, faithful practice. James goes further, suggesting that trials themselves produce steadfastness that leads to maturity (James 1:2-4), an uncomfortable but honest observation that difficulty is often the very context in which growth occurs. Recognising growth as a gradual, sometimes invisible process can relieve the frustration of feeling stuck, replacing impatience with a steadier trust that faithful small steps matter more than they may seem to in any given moment.
