    Reflection

Curiosity about things outside the Bible, whether historical texts, ancient writings, apocryphal books or extra-biblical sources, is a natural and longstanding interest among Christians and sceptics alike. Understanding what falls outside the biblical canon, and why, can actually deepen appreciation for how the Bible itself came together. The process of canonisation was not arbitrary; early church communities recognised certain texts as authoritative based on apostolic origin, consistency with established teaching and widespread acceptance across congregations. Other texts, sometimes interesting historically, were excluded for various reasons including questionable authorship or doctrine inconsistent with the core Gospel message. Exploring such material need not threaten faith; it can instead clarify what makes the biblical texts distinct and trustworthy. Paul commended the Bereans for examining the Scriptures daily to test what they were taught (Acts 17:11), modelling a posture of thoughtful, informed faith rather than either uncritical acceptance or reflexive suspicion. Engaging honestly with what lies outside the Bible, rather than avoiding the topic, reflects exactly this kind of careful, confident curiosity.
