    God's not punishing you

    Reflection

It is a common and painful assumption that hardship must be God punishing us for something, whether a past mistake, a lapse in faith or simply not being good enough. This belief can quietly shape how people interpret illness, loss or failure, often adding guilt to suffering that is already hard enough to bear. Classical Christian teaching pushes back firmly against this idea. When Jesus's disciples asked whether a man's blindness was caused by his own sin or his parents', Jesus rejected both explanations, saying instead that the man's condition would reveal God's work (John 9:2-3). Suffering in a fallen world is not always, or even usually, a direct divine penalty for specific wrongdoing. Christians believe God is characterised fundamentally by steadfast love, described repeatedly throughout the Psalms, and that even discipline within Scripture is spoken of as coming from a loving father rather than a vengeful judge (Hebrews 12:6). Letting go of the punitive lens can be genuinely freeing, opening space to seek God's presence in hardship rather than fearfully wondering what has been done to deserve it.
