    Reflection

Many believers today sense that Christianity is treated differently to other worldviews in public conversation, more readily criticised, mocked or dismissed than faiths that receive greater cultural sensitivity. Whether this perception is entirely fair or partly a matter of feeling, it touches something real: faith convictions can feel exposed and vulnerable in a sceptical public square. This is not a new experience for Christians. The early church operated as a minority faith within a hostile Roman world, and the New Testament repeatedly encourages steadiness rather than retaliation. Peter urges believers to be ready to give a reason for their hope, but to do so "with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15). That balance matters: neither silent withdrawal nor combative defensiveness reflects the tone the New Testament commends. Feeling criticised can tempt believers towards either resentment or fear, but historic faith calls for confident, humble witness instead, trusting that truth does not need to shout to be heard, and that how Christians respond to criticism often speaks as loudly as what they say in reply.
