I don't need God to be happy

Reflection
The claim that one does not need God to be happy is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing, since plenty of people report genuine, meaningful happiness without any religious faith at all. Christianity has never claimed that unbelievers cannot experience real joy; common grace, the idea that good gifts are available to all people regardless of belief, is a long-standing part of Christian theology (Matthew 5:45). What Christianity does claim is something different: not that happiness is unavailable elsewhere, but that lasting joy, peace that survives hardship, and a sense of purpose that outlives circumstances are found most fully in relationship with God. Augustine's famous observation that the heart is restless until it rests in God captures this, not as a denial of other happiness but as a claim about its ultimate depth and durability. The real question worth sitting with is not whether happiness without God is possible, since clearly it is, but whether it is the deepest and most lasting kind available.
Questions to sit with
- What is the deepest source of your own happiness at the moment?
- Have you experienced a kind of joy that felt different from ordinary happiness?
- Do you think happiness and lasting peace are the same thing?
