    Reflection

Dying to self is one of the more demanding phrases in the Christian vocabulary, and one that resists easy comfort. Paul wrote that he had been crucified with Christ, and that it was no longer he who lived, but Christ who lived in him (Galatians 2:20), language that suggests a genuine death to old patterns, priorities, and self-centredness rather than a minor adjustment of behaviour. Jesus himself put it plainly, saying that whoever wanted to save their life would lose it, and whoever lost their life for his sake would find it (Matthew 16:25). This is not a call to erase individuality or personality, but to release the grip of pride, self-protection, and the constant need to come first. It is a slow, ongoing process rather than a single decisive moment, and most Christians would admit they return to it again and again. There is real freedom on the other side of it, since letting go of the exhausting effort to control everything often makes space for a more honest and peaceful way of living.
