Why Did God come as the son of God

    Reflection

Why God chose to become human in Jesus rather than simply issuing instructions from a distance is a question Christians have wrestled with for centuries. The classic answer is that it was not primarily about communication but about solidarity and rescue. John's Gospel puts it starkly: the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us (John 1:14). God did not merely send a message about love, but entered fully into human weakness, hunger, grief, and eventually death, in order to redeem humanity from within rather than from outside. This idea, known as the incarnation, sits at the very centre of Christian belief and distinguishes it from many other ways of thinking about the divine. It suggests a God who is not distant or unmoved by suffering but who has personally experienced it. Paul described Jesus as one who, though existing in the form of God, did not cling to that status but humbled himself even to death (Philippians 2:6-8). That kind of self-giving remains, for many believers, the most compelling evidence of God's character.

    Questions to sit with

    • Does it change anything for you to think of God as having experienced human suffering firsthand?
    • What would a distant, uninvolved God look like compared with the God described in the Gospels?
    • How do you personally relate to the idea of God humbling himself for others?
