    Deception

    Reflection

Deception is a theme that runs throughout Scripture, from the serpent's subtle twisting of God's words in Eden to warnings Jesus gave about false teachers who would arise claiming to speak truth. The concern is not paranoia but discernment, a call to test what is heard against what is known to be true, and to recognise that not everything appealing or persuasive is necessarily good. Paul warned that even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), a striking image suggesting that deception rarely looks obviously wrong. It often looks reasonable, attractive, even spiritual. This is why Christian tradition places such emphasis on grounding oneself in Scripture, community, and prayer, since these provide a stable reference point against which claims can be measured. Being alert to deception is not about suspicion of everyone and everything, but about cultivating the kind of wisdom that can tell the difference between what merely sounds good and what actually is.
