    Reflection

Prophecy occupies a distinctive place within the biblical tradition, referring not primarily to predicting the future in a fortune telling sense but to speaking God's truth into a particular moment, often calling people back to faithfulness. Many Old Testament prophets addressed the pressing concerns of their own day: injustice, idolatry, and covenant unfaithfulness, and it is often only in hindsight that some of their words are recognised as also pointing forward. Christians have long read certain Old Testament prophecies as finding their fulfilment in Jesus, understanding the entire biblical narrative as a unified story moving toward him. Isaiah's description of a suffering servant, wounded for our transgressions (Isaiah 53:5), is one of the most frequently cited examples. Whatever view one takes of specific prophetic texts, the broader idea remains significant: that God has spoken across history, not leaving humanity without guidance or hope, and that this speaking continues to be understood, prayed over, and wrestled with today.
