Reflection
Change is something almost everyone longs for at some point, whether changing a habit, a circumstance or a deeper pattern of thought and behaviour. Genuine change, however, is often harder to achieve than simply wanting it, since willpower alone frequently proves insufficient against ingrained habits or painful histories. Christian faith speaks of change not primarily as self-improvement but as transformation, described by Paul as being renewed in the spirit of the mind and putting on a new nature (Ephesians 4:22-24). This is not a quick fix but an ongoing process, often described as sanctification, involving both divine grace and human cooperation over time. It also reframes the goal of change: not simply becoming a better version of oneself by personal standards, but becoming more like Christ in character, marked by qualities such as patience, kindness and humility. This can be a relief for anyone exhausted by repeated failed attempts at self-directed change, since it locates the power for lasting transformation outside the self, in relationship with God, rather than purely within personal effort and discipline alone.
Questions to sit with
- What change have you been trying, and struggling, to make on your own?
- How might relying on God's grace look different from relying purely on willpower?
- What would genuine transformation, rather than surface improvement, look like for you?
