Reflection
Interest in DMT and other substances that alter perception often arises from a search for transcendence, a desire to touch something beyond ordinary experience, whether described as spiritual, mystical or simply profound. Such experiences can feel deeply real to those who have them, yet raise important questions about their source and meaning. Christian tradition takes seriously the human longing for encounter with the transcendent, since it believes people are made for relationship with God and will inevitably search for that connection in various ways (Ecclesiastes 3:11 speaks of eternity being placed in the human heart). However, Scripture consistently distinguishes between genuine spiritual experience rooted in relationship with God and altered states induced by chemical means, cautioning against seeking spiritual shortcuts that bypass character, discernment and relationship (Galatians 5:19-21 lists sorcery, closely related to drug use in the original language, among behaviours inconsistent with life in the Spirit). This is not a dismissal of the genuine longing behind such experimentation but an invitation to consider whether the search for transcendence might find a steadier, more trustworthy answer in prayer, worship and relationship with God rather than substances.
Questions to sit with
- What is it you are ultimately searching for when you seek transcendent experiences?
- How do you distinguish between genuine spiritual encounter and altered perception?
- Have you explored prayer or worship as a path towards the transcendence you are seeking?
