I got invited to church and this happened

First visits to church can go in almost any direction, warmly welcoming, awkwardly unfamiliar, unexpectedly moving or simply confusing depending on the church, the person and the moment. What happens in that first encounter often shapes whether someone ever returns, which places real weight on how churches welcome newcomers, whatever their reason for showing up. The early church in Acts was known partly for its radical hospitality, breaking bread together and sharing what they had with glad and sincere hearts, and the text notes this drew favour and growth (Acts 2:46-47). An invitation to church is rarely just an invitation to a building or a service, it is an invitation into a community, imperfect as any community is, that claims to be shaped by the presence of God. Whatever the specific experience of any first visit, the underlying question worth sitting with afterwards is less about the style of the service and more about whether something real was encountered there.
Questions to sit with
- What was your own first experience of church like, if you can remember it?
- How welcoming do you think your own church community would feel to a genuine newcomer?
- What made the biggest impression on you the last time you visited somewhere unfamiliar?
