    Reflection

Naming a personal failure publicly, especially as someone identified with Christian faith, takes a kind of honesty many people avoid because failure feels like it undermines credibility. Yet the Christian story has never depended on believers being flawless, it depends on a saviour who meets people precisely in their failure rather than only in their success. Peter denied Jesus three times on the night of his arrest, a failure recorded plainly in all four gospels rather than edited out to protect his reputation (Luke 22:60-62). That same Peter was restored and given real responsibility afterwards (John 21:15-17). The willingness of scripture to record its heroes' worst moments is itself instructive, it suggests failure is not disqualifying, it is often the very place where grace does its clearest work, provided a person is honest enough to let it.

    • Do you believe your worst moment could still be used for something good?
    • Who has shown you grace after a failure, and how did that change you?
