    Reflection

The charge that the Bible is intolerant is one of the more common objections raised against Christian faith today, usually aimed at its moral claims about sexuality, exclusivity or judgement. It is a fair challenge to take seriously rather than dismiss, since some passages are genuinely difficult and have been misused across history to justify real harm. At the same time, tolerance and truth are not quite the same thing, and a text can hold firm convictions about right and wrong while still commanding remarkable compassion toward those it disagrees with. Jesus, who spoke plainly about sin, was also the one who ate with tax collectors and defended a woman about to be stoned (John 8:7-11). The Bible's claim was never that all views are equally true, but it consistently pairs conviction with mercy, a combination that looks less like intolerance and more like a love that refuses to pretend everything is fine.

    Questions to sit with

    • Where do you draw the line between holding a firm belief and being intolerant of others?
    • Have you read a difficult biblical passage in its full context, or only heard it summarised?
    • Can you think of someone who held strong convictions while still treating you with real kindness?
