    Reflection

Comfort is rarely named as a spiritual danger, yet scripture repeatedly warns that ease can dull devotion in ways hardship never does. Jesus's words to the church in Laodicea, 'because you are lukewarm... I am about to spit you out of my mouth' (Revelation 3:16), describe a community made complacent precisely by its own prosperity. Persecuted Christians around the world often testify to a vivid, costly faith that Western believers, living amid relative safety and abundance, can find humbling to hear about. James writes of counting trials as pure joy because they produce perseverance and maturity (James 1:2-4), a framing that runs directly against instinctive preference for ease. This is not a call to manufacture suffering, which scripture never encourages, but an honest invitation to examine whether comfort has quietly displaced dependence on God with self sufficiency. Listening to believers who hold faith amid real cost can be one of the sharpest correctives available to complacent devotion.

    Questions to sit with

    • In what ways might comfort quietly weaken spiritual dependence on God without being noticed?
    • How does the warning to the Laodicean church challenge assumptions about prosperity and faith?
    • What can Christians in comfortable circumstances genuinely learn from persecuted believers elsewhere?
