Reflection
It might seem an odd pairing, kiwi skins and Jesus Christ, but small everyday observations have long been used to point towards larger truths. Nature is full of details that reward attention: a fruit's skin protecting something soft and valuable within, a seemingly ordinary thing hiding unexpected worth. This kind of noticing has a long place in Christian reflection. Jesus himself taught using everyday images, mustard seeds, lost coins, growing wheat, because the natural world was never seen as separate from spiritual truth but as continually pointing back to its maker. The Psalmist declares that "the heavens declare the glory of God" (Psalm 19:1), suggesting that creation itself speaks, if we are willing to listen. A small, playful observation about fruit skins need not be forced into deep theology, but it can still serve as a gentle reminder that wonder is available in ordinary moments, and that paying attention to the world is one way believers have always encountered something of God.
Questions to sit with
- When did you last notice something ordinary and find it strangely beautiful?
- Do you tend to see creation as simply functional, or as something that speaks?
- What small, everyday thing might God be using to get your attention lately?
