    Reflection

New age spirituality has become one of the most common alternatives to organised religion in Britain, drawing on energy, manifestation, crystals, astrology and the idea that the divine is found by turning inward. Its appeal is understandable: it offers meaning without institutions, and spirituality without anyone telling you that you are wrong. The Christian disagreement is not that spiritual hunger is foolish. It is about where that hunger leads. Christianity claims God is personal and other than us, someone who speaks and can be known, rather than an impersonal force we align ourselves with. That difference matters practically. If the divine is a force, spirituality becomes a technique you master. If God is a person, it becomes a relationship you receive. Scripture treats the hunger seriously while warning against self directed spirituality (Colossians 2:8), and conversations between the two views work best when both sides take the other's reasoning seriously rather than caricaturing it.

    Questions to sit with

    • Are you drawn to spirituality that asks nothing of you, and why might that be?
    • Is the divine you imagine a force to be used or a person to be known?
    • What first drew you towards or away from organised faith?
