Man Listens to His Intuition... or the Holy Spirit? If You're Prompted, Always Follow the Cue. Here's Why.

Have you ever had one of those moments when something just tells you to do something? A thought comes into your head to call someone you haven't spoken to for years. You feel like you should check on a friend. You notice someone sitting alone and suddenly feel like you should go and talk to them. Maybe you even take a different route home for no particular reason. Most of the time, we probably call it intuition. A feeling. A coincidence. Something we can't quite explain. But what if sometimes it's something more? As Christians, we believe the Holy Spirit guides us. Not necessarily through an audible voice or some dramatic supernatural event, but often through quiet promptings — a thought, a feeling, a conviction or a gentle nudge that simply won't go away. The important thing is learning to recognise when that nudge might be from God. There is a brilliant example of this in Acts 8. Philip is told by the Holy Spirit to go over to a particular road and approach a chariot. There was nothing particularly logical about it. He didn't know who was inside or why he was supposed to go there. But he followed the prompting. Inside the chariot was an Ethiopian man who was reading the Scriptures but didn't understand what he was reading. Philip started a conversation with him, explained the good news about Jesus, and that conversation eventually led to the man being baptised. Imagine if Philip had thought, "That's strange. I'm probably imagining this." He might have walked straight past. Instead, he listened. And that is the part we often miss. Sometimes the prompting isn't actually about us. That sudden thought to message someone might be because they desperately needed to hear from somebody that day. That urge to ask someone if they're okay might come because they're struggling but haven't told anyone. That invitation you feel you should make might be the very invitation someone has been waiting for. You may never know what was happening on the other side of your obedience. Of course, that doesn't mean every thought or feeling we have is automatically the Holy Spirit. We have to use discernment. God will never lead us into something that contradicts His Word or His character. But when a prompting leads us towards love, kindness, courage, generosity, forgiveness, truth or pointing someone towards Jesus, perhaps we shouldn't be quite so quick to dismiss it. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would guide His followers into truth. And perhaps that guidance is sometimes much quieter than we expect. We often imagine God speaking through burning bushes, dramatic miracles and booming voices from heaven. But sometimes He might simply put someone on your heart. Sometimes He might make you notice the person everyone else walked past. Sometimes He might give you that thought that says, "Go and talk to them." And then comes the choice. Do you ignore it because it's inconvenient? Do you convince yourself it's just your imagination? Or do you stop, pray and say: "God, if that's You, I'm listening." You don't always need to understand why. You don't need to know the outcome. You just need to be willing to take the next step. Because one small act of obedience can have consequences you could never have imagined. The message you almost didn't send. The conversation you nearly avoided. The prayer you nearly didn't offer. The person you nearly walked past. You might think it was nothing. But perhaps, from God's perspective, it was exactly the thing that needed to happen. So the next time you get that nudge, don't automatically dismiss it as intuition. Pause. Pray. Test it against Scripture. And if it is consistent with God's character, have the courage to follow it. Because sometimes what we call a feeling may be a prompting. And sometimes the smallest prompting can become part of a much bigger story. You don't always need to know where God is taking you. Sometimes you just need to be willing to follow the cue.
