Reflection
Red carpet events like those at Cannes represent a certain kind of cultural spectacle: glamour, attention, and carefully curated image, all on public display. It is easy to view such moments with either envy or scorn, but they also offer a useful mirror for reflecting on what our own culture, and sometimes our own hearts, tend to admire and reward. Appearance, applause, and recognition are powerful currencies, and most people feel their pull in some form, even if their own stage is far smaller than a film festival. Scripture consistently offers a different measure of worth. Samuel was told that people look at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). This does not mean beauty or celebration are wrong in themselves, but it does invite a healthy scepticism about equating outward glamour with inner substance. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a spectacle, but Christian wisdom encourages holding it lightly, remembering that the applause of a crowd is a fragile and temporary thing compared with a life well lived in quieter faithfulness.
Questions to sit with
- What kind of recognition or applause do you find yourself most drawn to seek?
- How do you personally distinguish between healthy enjoyment of glamour and being consumed by it?
- What would it look like for you to measure worth by character rather than appearance?
