The Bible breaks the script

Reflection
There is a long tradition of noting how often the Bible undercuts the expectations of its own time: shepherds and not kings first hear of Christ's birth, a crucified man is proclaimed as saviour rather than a conquering hero, and the last are repeatedly said to be first (Matthew 20:16). Paul describes the message of the cross as foolishness to some and a stumbling block to others, yet the power of God to those who believe (1 Corinthians 1:18). It rarely follows the script that human power and status would write for themselves. This pattern is worth noticing because it is easy to unconsciously read scripture through modern assumptions about strength, success and status, and then be surprised when it resists them. The Bible consistently elevates humility over pride, weakness used by God over self-sufficient strength, and grace over merit. That is not simply a literary quirk; it reflects something central about the character of God, who works differently than human systems of power typically do.

- Can you think of a biblical story that genuinely surprised your expectations?
- How might God be working through weakness rather than strength in your life right now?
