    Reflection

Many elements of the traditional wedding, from vows to rings to the presence of a minister, have roots that stretch back through centuries of Christian practice, even though some customs predate Christianity and were later adopted and reshaped by the church. Marriage itself, however, is presented in scripture as far older than any particular ceremony, rooted in the creation account where God brings the man and woman together as one flesh. The church's involvement in weddings grew over time, as marriage came to be seen not merely as a private or civil arrangement but as a covenant made before God and witnessed by the community. Understanding these origins can deepen appreciation for a wedding day, reminding couples that the vows they exchange echo a much older and larger story about faithfulness, covenant, and the image of Christ's love for the church described in Ephesians 5.
