Just before a young man passed away

Reflection
News or footage of someone dying young has a way of interrupting ordinary routines with unusually sharp questions about mortality, purpose and what actually matters. It is a moment that resists easy commentary, and any response should be handled with care rather than turned into a lesson too quickly. Scripture does not shy away from the brevity of life, describing it as a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes (James 4:14). That honesty is not meant to produce despair but perspective. Moses's prayer asks God to teach us to number our days, so that we may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12), which suggests that awareness of mortality, held rightly, can sharpen rather than dull how a person lives. For those affected by loss, especially sudden and untimely loss, the Christian hope does not remove grief but sets it within a larger story, one that includes resurrection and the promise that death is not the final word (1 Corinthians 15:55).
Questions to sit with
- How aware are you, day to day, of the shortness of life?
- Has a loss ever changed what you consider truly important?
- What would you want to be true of your life if it were to end sooner than expected?
