    Reflection

Grace, the free and unearned favour of God, sits at the very centre of the Christian message, but it has always carried a temptation alongside it, the temptation to treat forgiveness as a licence rather than a gift. Paul faced this question directly, asking rhetorically whether believers should go on sinning so that grace may increase, and answering firmly that such a life would contradict the very meaning of having died to sin. Genuine grace does not remove moral seriousness, it deepens it, because gratitude for what has been freely given tends to produce a desire to honour the giver rather than exploit their generosity. This is not about earning favour through good behaviour, since grace by definition cannot be earned, but about recognising that a changed heart naturally seeks to live differently. Abusing grace treats forgiveness as a transaction to be exploited rather than a relationship to be honoured, and Scripture consistently warns against exactly that mindset.

    • Have you ever caught yourself treating forgiveness as permission rather than gift?
    • How do you personally hold together freedom and moral seriousness in your faith?
    • What helps you respond to grace with gratitude rather than presumption?
