Standing on truth

Standing on truth, particularly when it is unpopular, is one of the costlier callings of Christian discipleship, and scripture does not pretend this is easy. Daniel's refusal to stop praying despite a royal decree, and the disciples' insistence that they must obey God rather than human authorities in Acts 5, both show conviction held firm under real pressure rather than mere stubbornness. Standing on truth is not the same as being harsh or combative; it requires the kind of steadiness Paul describes in Ephesians 6 as standing firm, girded not with aggression but with truth, righteousness, and peace. Genuine conviction can be held with humility, open to correction where a person has genuinely misunderstood something, while remaining unmoved on matters where scripture and the historic Christian faith speak with clarity. Costly truth telling, done well, is marked as much by gentleness as by resolve.
