Protect yourself, but help others

Balancing self protection with a call to help others is a tension many Christians feel keenly, especially in a world where generosity can sometimes be exploited. Scripture does not demand reckless self neglect; wisdom literature repeatedly commends prudence and care. At the same time, the parable of the good Samaritan in Luke 10 shows that love of neighbour sometimes requires real risk and personal cost, stepping past caution to meet someone else's need. The balance is not a fixed formula but a matter of discernment, weighing genuine wisdom against genuine compassion, and resisting the temptation to let either virtue excuse the neglect of the other. Protecting yourself and helping others are not opposites when both are shaped by love, humility, and honest assessment of the situation in front of you.
