Life is unfair, but God is just

    Reflection

The observation that life is unfair is almost universally shared, crossing every culture and belief system, and it is one of the most honest starting points for talking about God rather than an obstacle to it. Injustice, whether personal or global, genuinely offends something deep in us, and Christianity takes that offence seriously rather than explaining it away. Scripture consistently affirms that God is just even while acknowledging that justice is not always visible now. The Psalmist wrestled openly with watching the wicked prosper (Psalm 73:2-3) before finding perspective in God's ultimate purposes. Christian hope rests on the conviction that present unfairness is not the final word, that God will set right what remains wrong, even if not on the timeline any of us would choose. That hope does not remove the sting of injustice experienced now, but it insists the story is not yet finished.

    Questions to sit with

    • What experience of unfairness has most shaped how you think about God?
    • How do you hold onto hope when justice seems delayed or absent?
    • Do you trust that wrongs will ultimately be set right, and where does that trust come from?
