Flee from lust

The biblical instruction to flee from certain temptations rather than negotiate with them can sound old fashioned in a culture that generally prizes confronting and managing difficult feelings rather than avoiding them. Yet there is real wisdom in recognising that some struggles are not won by willpower alone in the moment of testing, but by decisions made well before that moment arrives. Paul tells Timothy to flee youthful passions and instead pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace (2 Timothy 2:22), pairing the negative instruction with a positive pursuit rather than leaving a vacuum. This is not shame based thinking, it is practical honesty about human weakness. Lust in particular thrives on unguarded moments, private habits and small compromises that feel harmless individually. The call to flee is really a call to build in advance the boundaries, friendships and habits that make fleeing possible when temptation actually arrives.
