Christianity Changes

The claim that Christianity changes people sits at the heart of the New Testament's description of conversion, not as mere behaviour modification but as a genuine inward transformation. Paul describes it in 2 Corinthians 5:17 as becoming a new creation, the old having passed away and the new having come. This change is rarely instant or complete in every area of life; it is better understood as an ongoing process the church has traditionally called sanctification, worked out over years through the Holy Spirit, scripture, prayer, and community. Genuine change is not about performing religious behaviour but about a reordering of desires and loves, so that patience, honesty, and compassion begin to grow where selfishness once dominated. It is this lived, visible change that has convinced so many observers throughout history that something real is happening beneath the surface of belief.
Questions to sit with
- What change have you noticed in yourself since coming to faith, however small?
- Where do you still feel resistant to the process of transformation?
- How do you distinguish real inward change from surface religious behaviour?
