    Reflection

Exploring the experiences described by people living with schizophrenia, including reported perceptions of entities, raises genuinely difficult questions at the boundary of psychology and spiritual belief. Christians should approach such territory with real humility, resisting the urge to offer confident spiritual explanations for what is, first and foremost, a serious mental illness deserving compassionate clinical care. Jesus's own ministry included healing people described in the Gospels as afflicted in ways that combined physical, mental and spiritual distress, and his response was consistently marked by compassion rather than judgement (Mark 5:1-15). Scripture does acknowledge a spiritual realm, but it never treats that acknowledgement as a substitute for medical understanding or as licence for careless diagnosis of another person's suffering. Anyone speaking publicly about the inner experience of serious mental illness carries a responsibility to do so carefully, since such conditions affect real people whose dignity deserves protection from being reduced to spectacle.
