    Reflection

Debating the origin of the laws of nature pushes right up against the edge of what science, by its own method, can explain, since the laws themselves are typically assumed rather than derived from something more basic. Scripture speaks of God as the one who 'determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name' (Psalm 147:4), suggesting an ordered universe governed by intention rather than chance alone. Public debate between a Christian and a naturalist on such foundational questions can be genuinely illuminating, since it forces both sides to articulate assumptions that are usually left unexamined. Neither position can be proven with the same certainty as an experiment inside those laws, which makes humility appropriate on all sides, including for believers. What such debates often reveal, more than a decisive winner, is how much of the disagreement rests on prior conviction about what kind of universe we are prepared to expect, whether ordered by mind or by chance.

    Questions to sit with

    • What does it mean that the laws of nature themselves cannot be explained by the scientific method that depends on them?
    • How does Psalm 147:4's picture of an intentional, ordered universe compare with a purely naturalistic account?
    • Why might humility be appropriate for both sides of such a foundational debate?
