    Reflection

Cultural challenges to faith are rarely new in substance, even when their form changes with each generation; questions about meaning, authority, and truth have always pressed on believers, only the vocabulary shifts. What makes a conversation about faith and cultural challenge worthwhile is honesty about the difficulty rather than easy reassurance. The writer of Hebrews describes faith itself as 'confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see' (Hebrews 11:1), a definition that assumes uncertainty rather than eliminating it. Believers navigating a sceptical culture are not required to have every answer ready; they are asked to keep trusting even while questions remain open. That posture, neither anxious defensiveness nor uncritical accommodation, allows for genuine engagement with difficult cultural currents. The most durable Christian witness has usually come not from winning cultural arguments outright but from communities that kept living faithfully through changing and often unfriendly circumstances.

    Questions to sit with

    • What cultural challenge to faith do you personally find hardest to answer?
    • How do you hold on to hope for what is unseen without pretending doubts do not exist?
    • What has sustained your faith through changing or unfriendly circumstances?
