Reflection
Faith and modern society sit in an uneasy relationship, not because faith is outdated but because contemporary life is organised around assumptions, about autonomy, comfort, and immediate results, that often sit awkwardly with older habits of patience, submission, and trust. Naming that tension honestly is more useful than pretending it does not exist. Paul warned the church in Rome, 'Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind' (Romans 12:2), acknowledging that conformity is the default and transformation requires deliberate, ongoing attention. That is not a call to withdraw from modern life but to examine it critically, keeping what is genuinely good and questioning what merely feels normal because everyone around us assumes it. Conversations about faith's place today are valuable precisely because they resist the temptation to treat either wholesale rejection or wholesale acceptance of modern culture as the obviously Christian response.
Questions to sit with
- Which modern assumptions do you find hardest to question, even when they conflict with your faith?
- What would it look like practically to have your mind 'renewed' rather than simply conformed?
- Where have you seen faith genuinely engage modern culture without either retreating or capitulating?
